Antoine Lavoiser was born on August 26, 1743 in France, he studied chemistry and biology. He named oxygen as well as hydrogen and he helped develope the metric system of measurements. He was the first to identify slfur as an element, not a compound. He also discovered that although matter varies in different shapes and form, its mass always stays the same. But at the peak of the French Revolution he was accused for distributing tobacco and was guillotined. Unfortunately this was the cause of his death May 8, 1794.

Historical Background

In every chemical experiment an equal amount of matter exists before and after.  That is, the amount of matter before a reaction must equal the amount of matter after a reaction.  No matter is lost.

Experimental Design/ Data collection

  • He concluded that matter can not be destroyed during a chemical reaction, even if it does change appearances.
  • Was known and is still known as the Father of Chemistry.
  • He discovered his theory of matter when he was experimenting with oxygen and combustion.
  • Today we still learn about the three phases of matter, which Lavoisier showed in his experiments.
  •
